Filing a Claim on your NY Business Insurance

4/30/2012 9:14:37 AM

You have taken all the necessary precautions to purchase insurance coverage for your business, and you have paid the premiums on time. Now there has been an accident, and you need to file a claim with your NY business insurance carrier. What do you need to do first?

The first thing you need to do is immediately contact your agent to report the accident. Review your policy if necessary in order to have a clear understanding of how the process will work, and what your responsibilities may be. Take photos or a video of the accident area before anything is altered in case the insurance adjuster needs them.

Once you have the go-ahead from your agent you can start to repair or replace any ruined equipment, and begin repairs or reconstruction on your building if necessary. Find out from your agent who you should contact to handle repairs, and if you need to obtain more than one quote from repair companies.

Should you need to file a business interruption claim, you may be required to show proof of the income the business was generating prior to the accident. You may also need money to keep the utilities paid or marketing projects going while the business is closed for repairs. Your NY business insurance agent should be able to walk you through filing a claim if the situation arises.
